This article presents a critical literature review towards studies on autonomous language learning (ALL) with mobile technology, published between 2014 to 2024. 25 articles from SCOPUS were selected based on predetermined inclusion criteria. Content analysis and thematic analysis are used to identify the common research trends, research designs and research results in studies on ALL with mobile technology. Major findings are (1) most research focused on the effect of ALL with mobile technology, followed by learners’ perception towards ALL with mobile technology, (2) the commonly used research method in studies on ALL with mobile technology was qualitative methods including surveys, questionnaires and interviews; (3) learners generally held positive attitudes towards ALL with mobile technology, whereas worries also existed. (4) most research in ALL with mobile technology found positive impact on learners’ academic performance and psychological aspects. The review provides valuable insight into the research purposes, language learning context, usage of mobile technology, research methods, instruments, learners’ perception and effectiveness in current studies. It also has meaningful implications for future research and practice on ALL with mobile technology.
