Abstract

Needs Analysis for the Development of a Game-Based Learning Application for Form 4 Additional Mathematics (Pilot Study)
Matematik Tambahan merupakan satu cabang mata pelajaran matematik yang dijadikan sebagai mata pelajaran elektif di peringkat menengah atas di sekolah-sekolah di Malaysia. Mata pelajaran ini diperkenalkan bagi menyediakan pelajar ke arah bidang Sains, Teknologi, Kejuruteraan dan Matematik (STEM). Gaya pengajaran guru perlu berbeza-beza mengikut peredaran semasa dan generasi yang diajar untuk menarik minat mereka mengikut perubahan zaman yang mereka alami. Dengan kemajuan teknologi pendidikan, guru perlu melengkapkan diri dengan pengetahuan teknikal, pedagogi dan kemahiran untuk menghasilkan proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran (PDP) agar lebih berkesan dan berkualiti tinggi. Analisis keperluan ini bertujuan untuk Mengenal pasti keperluan pembangunan aplikasi pembelajaran berasaskan permainan berdasarkan kepada persepsi murid serta mengenal pasti ciri-ciri spesifikasi untuk membangunkan aplikasi pembelajaran matematik tambahan berasaskan permainan dalam talian. Soal selidik dalam talian telah digunakan dalam kajian ini yang melibatkan 30 orang responden yamg terdiri daripada murid tingkatan empat di Daerah Seberang Perai Tengah, Pulau Pinang. 80% daripada responden telah mencadangkan untuk membangunkan satu aplikasi pembelajaran yang berasaskan permainan dalam talian bagi menarik perhatian murid semasa sesi pengajaran dan pembelajaran matematik tambahan tingkatan empat.

Additional Mathematics is a branch of mathematics offered as an elective subject at the upper secondary level in Malaysian schools. This subject was introduced to prepare students for fields in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Teaching approaches must vary according to current developments and the generational characteristics of students to attract their interest in line with the changes they experience. With the advancement of educational technology, teachers must equip themselves with technical knowledge, pedagogy, and skills to ensure that the teaching and learning process (T&L) is more effective and of high quality. This needs analysis aims to identify the requirements for developing a game-based learning application based on students’ perceptions and to determine the specification features for creating an online game-based Additional Mathematics learning application. An online questionnaire was used in this pilot study, involving 30 Form Four students from the Central Seberang Perai District, Penang. 80% of the respondents suggested the development of an online game-based learning application to better capture students’ attention during the teaching and learning sessions of Form Four Additional Mathematics.
